As clean energy transitions gather pace, demand for critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare earth elements will grow quickly. This will require a significant ramp up in mineral supplies from new and diversified sources. However, the production and processing of these minerals are energy-intensive, incurring significant greenhouse gas emissions, and face significant risks associated with the environmental, social and governance (ESG) impacts of mining projects.

This event will explore options to achieve deep emissions reductions from critical minerals development and policy measures to promote actions and pathways to balance reliable supplies with sustainable development of mineral resources. At the same time, discuss how Africa can improve the ESG performance of its extractives industries and reap the economic benefits from its resources.
