Background information
Published since 2020, the IEA’s annual report on electricity provides valuable insights into the evolving electricity generation mix. Featuring the latest data on demand, supply and carbon dioxide emissions from the sector, this year’s edition includes analysis of recent policies and market developments, as well as detailed forecasts through 2027.
Electricity 2025 places a special focus on China, where electricity consumption has been growing faster than the overall economy since 2020. Additionally, the report looks at periods of low wind and sunshine, often referred to as Dunkelflaute, and the implications for electricity systems – emphasising the importance of better understanding of the weather phenomenon and preparing for such occurrences. It also includes a dedicated section on resource adequacy, identifying new trends and risks for power sector planning. In addition, it provides in-depth analysis on negative wholesale electricity prices, exploring the potential drivers.
