Global Methane Initiative

Last updated: 4 February 2025

Launched in 2004, the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) presently includes forty-eight Partner Countries. The GMI seeks to find ways for abating and harnessing methane emissions from various sectors, including oil, gas and coal.

The GMI builds on the existing structure and success of the 'Methane to Markets Partnership' to reduce emissions of methane, while enhancing and expanding these efforts and encouraging new resource commitments from country partners.

The GMI is an international public-private initiative that advances cost effective, near-term methane recovery and use as a clean energy source in three sectors: biogas (including agriculture, municipal solid waste, and wastewater), coal mines, and oil and gas systems.
