Last updated: 28 October 2024

The Strategic Action Plan on Batteries (Annex to the Communication of the Commission of 17 May 2018 on ‘Europe on the move – Sustainable Mobility for Europe: safe, connected and clean’) is part of the European Commission’s broader initiative to create a sustainable and competitive battery value chain in Europe. The Action Plan provides context and justification for the Batteries Regulation under paragraph 7 of the whereas clauses.

Some key provisions in the Action Plan are as follows:

  1. Sustainability Focus: The plan emphasises sustainability throughout the battery lifecycle, from raw material extraction to recycling and disposal.
  2. Value Chain Integration: It promotes a cross-border and integrated approach, covering all stages of the battery ecosystem.
  3. Innovation and Competitiveness: The plan aims to boost innovation and competitiveness in the European battery industry, ensuring it can compete globally.
  4. Circular Economy: It supports the principles of a circular economy, encouraging the reuse and recycling of batteries to minimise environmental impact.
