Federal investment in hydrogen in Alberta

The Minister of Northern Affairs, responsible for the Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), announced a CAD 1.35 million funding for a hydrogen project in Alberta. The money will be employed to retrofit hydrogen fuel facilities, to improve technology and to test the equipment used to store and transport hydrogen. The government of Canada considers Alberta a potential leader in the hydrogen economy, as the region has access to low-cost natural gas reserves and counts on a skilled workforce in the natural resource sector.

PrairiesCan had already contributed to the investment with CAD 1.2 million announced in April 2021, aimed at launching a hydrogen hub in the Edmonton region.
